He is born in 1952 at Balti, West Bengal. He graduated from Government College of Arts, Kolkata, 1975.

Samir Mondal’s most amazing contribution to Indian art of modern times is a continual revival of water colour. His water colours have never lost their originality, their innovativeness and their classic elegance, yet they are truly modern paintings. 

He is awarded A.P.Council of Artists, Hyderabad (1995), All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS), New Delhi (1986), West Bengal State Academy (1979, 83), Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (1978, 83), Govt. College of Arts, Kolkata (1970,72,73,74).

Mondal has held 34 solo shows till date and participated in many important group exhibitions in major cities of India and abroad. Visited Paris and major cities of Germany for art study under INDO-FRG Cultural Exchange Programme organised by DAAD. Participated in many prestigious Art auctions including Christies and important Artists' camps and workshops in Dubai, Mauritius, Australia, Bangkok, Kenya, Israel, Egypt, Russia, Morocco and China.
